The Breville Bambino portafilter size is 54 mm for the BES450. The Bambino Plus BES500 also uses a 54 mm portafilter. That shared size is a starting point for a fit check, not proof that any handle marked 54 mm will lock in place.
Match the full model code before you order. Breville lists a 54 mm portafilter for each Bambino model. A basket, tamper and complete portafilter have different fit checks. Ask for a written BES450 or BES500 fit claim for a third-party handle. The ears, basket height and room above the cup still matter. Unpublished dimensions stay unknown.
Breville Bambino portafilter size by model
The BES450 US instruction book, Components and Accessories, lists a 54 mm aluminum portafilter and a 54 mm tamper. The BES500 US instruction book lists the Plus model's 54 mm portafilter.

Read the model label on the machine. A shop may shorten the name to Bambino, even when its listing covers only one version. A photo of a familiar handle does not settle which version the seller will send.
Breville Bambino portafilter size and basket fit
The portafilter is the handle and metal head that locks into the machine. The basket is the small cup that holds the grounds. The tamper presses those grounds level. The same nominal size appears on all three, but each part meets a different surface.
A basket must sit flat under its rim and stay held by the spring. Its base must clear the inside of the handle. A taller basket can share a rim size with a shorter one yet fail that last check. The 54 mm label gives no rim-to-base height limit.
A tamper must move inside the basket without binding. Basket walls can taper. Check the basket maker's stated tamper fit before you choose a very close-fitting tool. The factory's nominal 54 mm size does not give an exact internal bore all the way down.
Single-wall and dual-wall baskets also serve different jobs. In the BES450 manual, Breville directs freshly ground coffee to single-wall baskets. It directs pre-ground coffee to dual-wall baskets. This choice affects the grind you need. Both use the machine's same nominal portafilter size.
Check a replacement before brewing
Start with the original part if you still have it. With the machine cool and off, compare the new part's rim and locking ears. Check the basket's rim-to-base height too. Look for a clear part number and the full supported model list. Keep the packaging until you have checked the fit.
Do not force a handle that stops well short of its normal position. Do not try to correct a mismatch by filing an ear or tightening the handle harder. An incorrect part can load the seal poorly or fail to lock as intended. Ask the part maker to resolve the mismatch.
For a bottomless handle, check space below the basket too. It has no spouts to guide the coffee into the cup. Poor puck preparation may send hot coffee sideways. A bottomless design is a way to observe flow, not a promise of a better drink.
Before buying, send the seller a short question: “Does this exact part fit a US BES450?” Use BES500 instead for the Plus. Ask which basket comes with it and how tall a basket the handle can hold. Save the reply beside the order record.
Keep your part numbers together
Record the machine code, replacement part number and basket name. Add the source link and the check date. If you replace a seal later, that record helps you avoid ordering by handle appearance alone.
Measure a loose basket only when you know which dimension you need. Rim width, body width and internal opening are different measurements. A ruler laid across the rim cannot prove a tamper's exact fit. A diagram that labels those surfaces is more useful than one unlabelled diameter.
For another machine, use the separate Dedica fit guide. Its size and model families need their own checks. Our budget buying guidance explains how to keep extra parts within the full setup budget.
Frequently asked questions
Does 54 mm mean every Breville handle fits?
No. Match the machine model and the part maker's fit list. Nominal basket size alone cannot confirm the locking interface.
Should I buy a larger basket first?
Only if you have a clear need and confirmed clearance. Learn the supplied basket before adding a part that alters the dose and puck height.
Can I reuse the supplied tamper?
Check the replacement basket's stated fit. A shared nominal size does not prove that a close-fitting tamper will move freely in it.
Verdict
Breville Bambino portafilter size is 54 mm on both BES450 and BES500. Order by exact model and part number. Check the ears separately from the basket height, and leave unknown dimensions out of a fit claim.
