What goes into your estimate

Enter the amount you will spend on the machine, a grinder and missing equipment. Use zero for gear you already own. A machine under $500 can still need a larger complete-setup budget.

The routine tab separates the drinks you stop buying from every drink you make at home. More home coffee without fewer café purchases adds cost. The result includes all home ingredients, daily electricity and annual upkeep, then deducts the equipment purchase for year one and five years.

Starting values and units

The milk starting price is the September 2026 US city average for whole fortified milk from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The electricity starting price is the August 2026 US residential average from the US Energy Information Administration. All other starting amounts describe an editable example.

Bag weights accept grams, ounces, pounds or kilograms. Milk accepts milliliters, liters, US fluid ounces or US gallons. Drinks use 52 weeks per year and electricity uses 365 days. Coffee loss means the share of purchased grounds that never becomes a drink; milk used includes waste.

Use the payback result

Positive ongoing savings can recover the equipment cost. If running costs equal or exceed avoided café spending, the result says there is no payback. Prices and habits stay constant in the estimate; resale value, borrowing costs, your time and future upgrades are excluded.

For the coffee in each drink, use the dose and yield calculator. Start brewing with the espresso machine guide.
